Frequently asked questions

What about access?
Access to the LongHouse is via a cobble-stoned pedestrian tunnel, which slopes gently upwards. As the house is ancient there are a number of irregular steps internally, which make it unsuitable for wheelchairs or those with severe mobility difficulties. Our three letting bedrooms are on the first floor, up a steep narrow staircase. We do everything we can to assist our guests with disabilities or particular needs but suggest that you call in advance to ensure that what we are able to offer is appropriate.

Where can we eat nearby?
Moretonhampstead has several pubs and restaurants [including 2 daytime cafes and a take-away]. All are literally within a few yards of the LongHouse, and there are others on and around Dartmoor that we can direct you to. Booking is advisable, especially in high season.

What other local facilities are there?
Again, within easy walking distance, there is a cash point, post office [providing some cash banking facilities], supermarket, newsagent, hardware store and a pharmacy. There is a garage on Ford Street for repairs, but sadly, no petrol or diesel available in the village; the nearest filling station is at Chagford, 5 miles away. Lloyds bank is open on Tuesday and Thursday in Moretonhampstead.

What is there to do in the area?
Dartmoor is a proverbial paradise for walkers, with a variety of scenic or historic day excursions possible from Moretonhampstead itself. Horse riding and fishing are also available on the moor. We can provide a number of free maps and guides but the National Park Information Centre is a few yards away for more expert advice.

What about transport?
- Your best bet on the moor is your own car, especially out of season.
- Buses to Exeter, Plymouth, Newton Abbot, Okehampton and surrounding communities are available but frequency varies according to the time of year. Timetables can be obtained from the National Park Information Centre.
- Taxis charge £25-£30 or more one way from Exeter or Newton Abbot train stations; there are also local taxi services if you wish to dine out of town. Advance booking is advisable.
